Fleet Log

The  FLEET LOG is now accepting submissions.  Please see below for instructions on how to enter your boat into the Fleet Log.

The original Fleet Log was begun around 2004, and became a great resource to share information about one’s self and his boat as well as an invaluable historical resource for future owners and the fleet in general.. Those original entries are included in this new Fleet Log . There are entries for SS23, SS28, SS30, and SS34 fleets.

The new format for each entry is the same as the old format. We hope that with each new owner will come updated contact and location information as well as more history.

To submit a new listing, copy the following form, paste it into an email, fill the form out, and if desired attach a picture of your boat.

To update an old listing, do the same thing.

Then send your email to Greg Raleigh at:      gwrhbo@gmail.com

Here is the form:

Type: SS23 Weekender

Year: 1963

Owner:  Arthur Haberland

Hailing Port: Atlantic City, NJ

Info: This boat has been cut up and no longer exists.  It was purchased in 2014 and moved from Westport NY, where it sailed on Lake Champlain.  She was trailered to Atlantic city where the owner implemented a stem to stern, cabin top to keel restoration.  Many Sea Sprite owners followed his work through his blog, http://seasprite23flirt.wordpress.com/.  Near the end of the extensive owner rebuild (2019), the boat needed to be moved and fell from its deteriorating trailer.

Type: SS23 Daysailor

Year: 1967

Owner:  Lou Kimball

Hailing Port: Harpswell, ME

Contact loukimball@mac.com

Info: Robin will be my last Alberg boat. I’m retired now, but raced Ensigns for 25 years, got a Commander for the waters of Casco Bay once I stopped racing, but have now settled on the Sea Sprite, since my wife and I did not end up cruising. She sails like a dream, best of the three Alberg’s I’ve owned. I have a jib boom on her, so she’s self tacking, a dream to single hand. Just the slightest weather helm as she sails to windward, but with a quick adjustment to trim she will literally sail herself.

Type: SS23 daysailer

Year: 1972

Owner: John Holscher

Hailing Port: Warwick, RI

Contactstonewood1866@gmail.com

Info:
Builder; Dave Moore’s response to my post “who built my boat” on the SS23 forum was that it was his company “Sea Sprite Inc, which built some 42 of the SS23 Sea Sprites in North Kingstown, RI before they sold it to Wickford Shipyard.  They built some of the 200 series and most of the 300 series .”

I bought the boat in April of 2018 in reasonable condition and over the past year and a half have undertaken numerous projects including making a new tiller, replacing all standing rigging, installing new traveler and main sheet tackle, converting roller reefing main to slab reefing, running main boom downhaul, halyard and reefing lines into the cockpit, and plenty of sanding, painting and varnishing. A new wooden sliding hatch cover is my next project.

Info: There is no hull identification number on this boat.  The only markings of any kind found on the boat was located on the chainplate for the backstay.  It is stamped WSY, 526, 1073.  Hull ID numbers became a requirement in November of 1972.  Because this boat does not have a stamped HIN, I believe that the hull was completed prior to Nov 1972 and the rest of the boat completed after that.  The Wisconsin registration form from the previous owner lists the serial number as WSY2461073 and the year as 1969.

Info I had this boat built originally in 1982. I also bought a Triad trailer and Dyer Dinghy with it. The dinghy was stolen in 1984, and I sold the boat and trailer in 1987 because I needed the money. I found the boat for sale on the website of Eastern Yacht Sales in Hingham in 2003, had a survey done, and I bought the boat back in January of 2004, and now it sits in my back yard in Clemmons, NC. My wife and I are building a new residence in Deltaville, Virginia on the south shore of the Rappahannock River about four miles west of the delta on the Chesapeake. We will move there in November of 2007, and the boat will finally see the water in the Spring of 2008. She needs a little fixing up and cleaning. I am very glad to have her back, and the next time she is for sale is after I have made my final voyage.

Info: This is the fourth sailboat I’ve owned in my career.  (Not counting Penguins, Lasers, and Sunfish.) The first was a Pearson Ensign, Hull #162.  I bought the boat without knowing what kind it was…I just liked the Alberg lines.  My second boat was a J30.  We cruised and campaigned this boat for almost 20 years.  While still owning the J30, I discovered a neglected Sea Sprite daysailer which I bought and restored.  Every time I sailed this boat some nearby sailor commented on what a beautiful boat it was.  New paint, new hardware, new sails.  But beneath it all were the beautiful Alberg lines.  I recently purchased a Sea Sprite Weekender and sold the J30.  This Sea Sprite was one of the last built.  I’m in the process of restoring it so it looks “factory fresh.”  So far, I’ve had the bottom soda blasted, installed a new Harken furler system, installed Lewmar self-tailing winches, and a new Harken traveller system.  During the spring of 2022 I’ll strip and revarnish all of the brightwork and roll on some barrier coating and new ablative bottom paint.  Then, add some new sails.  Of all the boats I’ve owned, this one is the sweetest sailing.  I can trim the sails and take my hand off the tiller and sail for ¼-1/2 a mile.

Info:  I purchased Seeker, f.k.a. “Weetamoo”, from Dewey Thompson in Adamsville, RI in fall 2020. He & his family had been sailing her out of Westport Harbor since 2008. He didn’t have any info about her ownership prior to that. After “spring” projects, I launched her in Pawtuxet Cove in August 2021. We sail out of Edgewood Yacht Club & this fall have been bouncing around the Providence River and upper Narragansett Bay. We made it to Bristol Harbor for (part of!) the 2021 Hog Island race. Hopefully the coming winter/spring will involve removing the defunct head through-hulls, replacing the seized sink seacock, and possibly also the “chainplate project”: oh boy. See you out there next year!

*She has no hull number or sail number, 1969 was before standardized state hull numbers (her registered hull number is a “Massachusetts homemade boat” number which gives no info as to her production order…)

Info:  I am the proud, and third owner, of this SS28. Purchased in Sept. 2021, my primary sailing is done on Galveston Bay. From what I know, the boat originally came from Bristol, RI, to her first owner in Louisiana and was named, Vahalla. She was then owned for 25 years, or so, prior to me purchasing her with the name of Danse de Lune. Wanting to put my “stamp” and personality behind her, I named her “GOOSE” as she looks (colors, etc.) like a domestic Goose, and plus, I like saying the name… I also enjoy seeing everyone’s expressions when I tell them what her new name is. Their facial expressions make me laugh.
Looking forward to years and years of sailing on this well-cared-for and extraordinarily beautiful Sea Sprite

Info Our boat built in 1982, the third to be dubiously marketed as “owner completion” by the sales team at C.E. Ryder, still awaits to be finished!  It rolled from the Bristol factory basically a hull, blank interior plug, and of course the deck mated together with the engine installed as well.  Its original owner brought it up to  Penobscot Bay, and there it sailed when new.  He retired to Florida, and the boat sat on its poppets for close to ten years up in Northport Maine.  We bought it, removed the dead squirrels, and old oak leaves pulled the diesel for overhaul, and began the many years of finishing, and upgrading.

Info I purchased Sand Dollar three years ago (2003) down in Norfolk Virginia. She is currently moored in the Town of Owls Head, Maine in Rockland Harbor. When I went to Virginia to look at the boat before purchasing, I could see a faint outline of the boats original hailing port, Owls Head, ME. At that point I figured it was meant to be. I did a lot of research before deciding on the Sea Sprite 30 and have not been disappointed, she is a wonderful vessel. My wife Lisa, our two young children and I spend about 5 weeks of the summer, cruising the coast of Maine. She has proved to be as seaworthy as she is beautiful. I am beginning the fourth year of a five year upgrade plan, having just stripped the bottom paint off in preparation for barrier coating in the spring. I was pleased to find no evidence of blistering under the many years of old paint. The list of upgrades completed is a long one, and there seems to always be something to add to the upgrades to do list, but it is a labor of love. Fair Winds

# 8 “NEDAVERA”

Type:  SS 30

Year:  1984

Owner:  Dejan & Mary Radeka

Hailing Port:  Middletown, Rhode Island

Contact:  dradeka@cox.net

Info:  NEDAVERA was purchased by Dejan Radeka, from Gary Brink of Old Saybrook, CT in 2017, when she was called RADIANCE.  Dejan Radeka has replaced all of the deck hardware, running rigging, sails and all canvas.  All of the hardware layout has been re configured for single handed sailing with all control lines lead aft on the cabin top to the cockpit.   A Selden rigid vang was added, and the topping lift deleted.  The rig had been pulled in approx 2014/15 and was inspected again in 2018.  She runs a Hood Seafurl roller furler.  New self tailing #40 primary winches were added as well as a Sea Tiger windlass and all chain ground tackle.  She came well equipped with a suite of integrated Raymarine electronics.  She did require an upgrade to the autopilot control unit and VHF. Amazingly, she came equipped from the factory with a hydraulic autopilot drive system directly connected to the rudder quadrant, and this was easily integrated with the new Raymarine EV 200 autopilot in 2018.  She is still running her original Universal M-18 diesel engine, though this unit’s hours are unknown and her performance is down.  The engine was pulled and resealed, and the mounts and injectors replaced, in 2015/16.  The glow plugs were replaced in 2017.  The prop was reconditioned in 2018 to Class 1 specs and re-pitched to 14×8.  Our best guess based on some paperwork and the age of certain newer equipment is that Gary Brink purchased RADIANCE from her original owner, John F. Haley of Boston, MA in the late 90’s or early 2000’s at which point it appears he replaced sails, canvas and some electronics.   He later fitted the Raymarine suite as well as a new propane oven/stove at some point during his ownership.  Based on the available paperwork the original owner, John Haley, traded in a Sea Sprite 23 and commissioned the Sea Sprite 30 from Clarke Ryder of Ryder Yachts in September, 1983 and took delivery in the Spring of 1984.  Her name under John Haley’s tenure is unknown, though based on older paper charts found onboard it appears that she was sailed extensively north of Boston – Marblehead.  She currently enjoys romping around Southern New England waters and especially long daysails in any conditions outside the Sakonnet River as well as cruising to Buzzards Bay, Cuttyhunk and Martha’s Vineyard.

Info:               Sue and I bought Bella from John Hamilton in Harpswell, Maine, in the Fall of 2019. He had

owned her for 20 years. She came with a lightly used 2Y Yanmar replacing the old

Universal, new rigging, and new awl grip. We bought new sails, Sue replaced all the

cushions, we added new gps, radar, and AIS to deal with the lovely conditions of Buzzards’

Bay sailing, we replaced the traditional salt water head with a composting toilet (we

will never go back!!), replaced the galley plumbing and sinks, and replaced the original

stove with a new Dickinson stainless steel cooktop. A complete take-down of the toenail to

hardwood and many coats of clear Cetol along with much sanding and varnishing of the

rest of the brightwork spiffed her up. She is looking pretty good.

We sail out of the Westport River into RI Sound with many trips across Buzzards’ Bay

to Cuttyhunk Island. It is a beautiful sailing venue.

Info This boat was originallypurchased to be completed by the owner. The first owner completed about 90 percent of the work and sailed it in Maine waters for about eight years. It then spent the next seven years on the hard and neglected. I purchased the boat in August 2005 and spent the winter 2005-2006 doing significant cleaning updating and restoration. Major efforts included addition of a galley and fit finish work to the interior. Upgrades included addition of pressurized hot and cold water, roller furling with new 130 genoa and GPS. The hull was severely oxidized, but five passes with compound and buffer brought back a beautiful luster to the hull. Relaunch was June 27 2006. A little more fit and finish will be completed this winter and she will be finished.
She now sails the mid coast of Maine out of South Bristol and Johns Bay.

#CERL3411M83L “MANASQUAN”          Formerly known as MYSTIQUE II

Type: SS 34

Year: 1983

Owner: Stewart Toshach and Ellen Bynum

Hailing Port: LaConner, WA

Contact: skye@cnw.com

Info:  Mystique II (now Manasquan) had more road miles on her than sea miles when we bought her in 2010.  She was built in 1983, motored/sailed from RI to FL and then trucked to San Diego and sailed to the Catalina islands.  In May 1992 the 2nd owner trucked her to WA state, changed her name to Manasquan, and then sold to us.

We have added: Garmin navigation, Lewmar self tailing winches, Lewmar electric anchor winch, North Sails (2+2 main, 135 genoa and gennaker – all specd/designed by Henry Bossert who coincidentally, in about 1983, had designed his first set of sails for a Sea Sprite 34), North Sails stack-pack, roller reefing, boom kicker, Cunningham, dodger and Bimini, dripless seal, sound-proofing, engine compartment fan and vent, upgraded heat exchanger, a pull out ‘double’ berth to starboard in the cabin and LED bulbs/lights.

We also replaced: life lines, through hulls, wiring, nav lights, running rigging, forestay, all hoses, all pumps, alternator, sound insulation, engine mounts, VHF/antenna and wind vane (and etc!).

The Seasprite 34 is a fabulous and easy boat to sail/cruise and we use her from late spring to early fall sailing near to and in the San Juan Islands as well as in the Gulf Islands in B.C.

Info:  I am finishing my second season with “Alula” (which BTW is an elbow feather on some birds that they can twist to create more lift !!).  She comes to me from the original owner out of Old Saybrook CT who took great care of her for 35 years before passing her on to me.  Many thanks for that.

Strangely my sail and C. E. Ryder badge in cockpit are marked as #16 among the 52 SS34’s ever made.  But I see “Rising Sun” claims #16.  Alfred I suspect you really are #16 given your 1982 year.  Looks like I might be in the 30 somethings.

I have upgraded/added radios, chart plotters, inverters, Froli bed springs (which I recommend) among many other things. Working on deck paint and brightwork into next season.  Just getting our sea legs around Fishers Island and out to Block.  Next season we go further.  She stirs the heart every time I see her – as it should be.

SECOND FIDDLE is hull# 45 out of  52  SS 34’s  that ply the waters of North America and beyond. I found her (looking down around the ears) at the Spencer-Rybovich yard in West Palm Beach; she was 5 years old. When I summoned the courage to make an offer, broker –  Charlie Cox said I was too late as she just went under contract. For how much I asked?  .  .  . $49,000 he said. A week later he called to report the deal fell through . Knowing where  owner James Pugh (who had a Hinckley 43 under construction) , stood on his price, I offered $47,000, and two days later Cox called me at my law office in downtown Rutland Vermont; “you just STOLE that boat”. Good news ? Uh! That boat is 1800 miles and 7 tons away, and I have neither time, crew nor know how to bring her to her new home on Lake Champlain. By transport I got a heart stopping quote of $3300, and little choice. OK, I told the husband/wife team whose sole occupation was transporting sailboats, but for that kind of money I have one condition. You see, for years I had, from my law office window, a Birdseye view of that highway junction through which yachts passed when transported from the Mid – West to Maine. My boat would normally take a less congested route bypassing our Downtown on its way to Charlotte, Vermont’s Point Bay Marine. For my money, I wanted the vessel to tie up traffic in front of my office to the consternation of neighboring merchants, police and all folks I knew would have to yield to the massive dark blue hull with the white waterline and red bottom. She first touched the water in 1984 as SPELLBOUND, but upon my purchase she would be SECOND FIDDLE, a weak effort to convince my wife that she is FIRST.

My Uncle Ed has hull number 4
He purchased the boat new in the mid-1950s
The boat was continuously sailed in the Barnegat Bay right up until hurricane Sandy
In Sandy the boat was pretty beat up and the mast was lost
Anyone know where I could purchase a new mast for his Sea Sprite 23?
